Wildlife Centric Kayak Tours at Assateague Island National Seashore

The Wildlife Discovery Tour provides the opportunity to explore Assateague's fascinating ecosystem. Learn about Assateague's natural and cultural history aboard your own kayak, or take a tandem kayak with a friend! This hands on, experiential tour focuses on marine species, birds, plants and of course, Assateague's famous Wild Horses*. With the help of our expert guides you will safely meet some of the amazing creatures that inhabit Assateague Island, one of the world's most productive habitats.
Duration: 2 Hours on the water, though we recommend planning for 2.5-3 hours for the entire experience when you include paddle instruction, safety talk and trip preparations.
Where do we paddle? We paddle in the Sinepuxent Bay, it is shallow and sandy. We check out the salt marshes and stay somewhat near to the shoreline. We utilize multiple routes depending on conditions.
How deep is the water? The Sinepuxent Bay averages 2-5 feet in depth, and most of the areas we paddle are 2-3 feet with the exception of a few narrow channels.
Your tour includes all the gear you need. We provide tour guests with our finest kayaks, lifejackets, paddles and even include dry bags to keep your phone and keys safe.

Is there an age requirement? We do recommend kids are 4 and up for the tours. Rentals may be better suited for younger kids in case you need to take a break or return to shore.
What should we bring? All you need is your water bottle and some sunscreen and we will take care of the rest.
No bug spray? Insects aren't usually much of an issue on the water at Assateague, but feel free to bring some if you'd like.
*We prioritize finding horses on this tour, but is doesn't always happen, let's say 80/20 in favor of seeing the horses. They are wild animals and are always on the move while grazing, but we scout early and often to give you the best chance. However, there are hundreds of other amazing native species we may discover on the tour, and we think you, and definitely your kids, will still have a blast.
